Background

I am a native English speaker, originally from New York.  I hold a Master’s degree from Tufts University, Boston.  In the 1990s, I taught sociology and urban policy at the university level before becoming the proud mother of four lovely children. I have been teaching English to children and youth in the Lutry-Lausanne region since 2018.  My lessons are engaging, original and individually designed for my students’ needs and interests.  I enjoy working with children from a variety of backgrounds and with a diversity of learning styles.  Many of my students have been working with me for years and it has been a pleasure to help them develop their English from beginner level to fluency.

Lessons Design

My lessons are 55 minutes in length.  I bring a suitcase of materials to my lessons with an ever-changing selection of learning games, props and a wonderful selection of children’s and youth literature for all levels. I lead my students on conversation skills, pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, and writing.

I provide several pages of homework to each of my students and I review the homework the following lesson, helping my students with corrections. I have built over the years a vast collection of quality workbook and teaching materials. I choose themes during the course of the year. In 2023-24 my students and I explored topics including pocket money, monsters, fashion history, pet care, and arctic exploration. My older students read excerpts from The Fall of the House of Usher, The Wizard of Oz, Oliver Twist, Abel’s Island, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Frankenstein, and The Great Gatsby. I love English literature and it is a pleasure to introduce my more advanced students to classic works. I equally appreciate the wonderful English literature for younger audiences and supply my students with readings from some of the best of English children’s literature, both contemporary and classic.

I design my lessons to engage and motivate students by alternating serious and academic work with active games, story writing, crafts, lifestyle surveys, English songs, dramatic readings, cooking, scavenger hunts. The longer I teach the more methods I have picked up over the years for keeping our lessons fun and effective.

Success

Seven years ago, I began teaching with two client families. Today, without engaging in any publicity, I have almost two dozen students from beginner to university level, ages 7 to 17. My students come from a variety of language backgrounds. Most speak a language besides French in their family homes. All of my client families understand the multiple advantages that speaking proper English will give their children.

I have retained many of the students I have been working with since the inception of After School English. Many of my students came to me with no English learning and are now fluent English speakers. Because the lessons are fun and varied, I am able to retain my students’ interest so that they have been able to progress from debutant to advanced speakers. It’s been a joy to be part of my students’ learning over so many years!
